Courtney White
Writer & Associate Editor

Courtney White has worked on the front lines of collaborative conservation, regenerative agriculture, and ecological restoration for more than two decades, sharing innovative, on-the-ground solutions that bring people together. A former archaeologist and environmental activist, Courtney dropped out of the ‘conflict industry’ in 1997 to cofound the Quivira Coalition, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to building a radical center among ranchers, conservationists, scientists, and others around practices that improve resilience in working landscapes. He directed the Quivira Coalition for eighteen years before leaving 2015 to write full-time.

In 2005, Wendell Berry included Courtney’s essay “The Working Wilderness” in his collection The Way of Ignorance. Courtney’s books include Revolution on the Range (Island Press); Grass, Soil, Hope (Chelsea Green); The Age of Consequences (Counterpoint Press); and 2% Solutions for the Planet (Chelsea Green). He contributed writing to Dirt to Soil: One Family’s Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture by Gabe Brown (Chelsea Green) and co-authored Fibershed: a New Textile Economy with Rebecca Burgess (Chelsea Green). Courtney was Senior Writer on Regeneration: Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation by Paul Hawken. He is author of The Sun, a mystery set on a working cattle ranch in northern New Mexico. He lives in Santa Fe.
